Being a first generation of immigrants to the United States from the West African State of The Gambia, my wife and I faced many challenges and uncertainties in our newfound home. Like many immigrants to this great land of opportunities, we were determined to take our chances to build better lives for ourselves and our children!
We got married in our early 20s and decided to settle in the state of Washington. It was a challenging but exciting time in our lives. Our initial purpose for coming to America was to pursue higher education in college and build a better future for our family. We supported each other starting with community college one at a time, but, of course, man proposes God disposes. As a young couple, we enjoyed each other’s company, and before we knew it, we were expecting our first child in my first year in college! It was a bouncing baby boy who brought a whole new meaning to our lives. It was the greatest joy of our lives that we had never experienced before.
Being away from parents and grandparents where “it takes a village to raise a child,” we were faced with new challenges raising a young family. We had to rearrange our schedules to ensure we could spend time together, work full time and take care of our newborn. I worked a swing shift while my wife worked nights, so our baby always had someone at home to care for him. It was a lot to handle, but we were determined to take every opportunity we had to build our future together through thick and thin. Eventually, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Washington. I encouraged my wife to also go to college and get her bachelor’s while I worked full time. When she was done, I returned to get my MBA in Business Management and Marketing. My wife finally got her bachelor’s degree in Society, Ethics and Human Behavior. The mutual support we offered one another was fundamental to our individual and joint success through college.
Of course, by the time we were finally done with college, we had three beautiful children – a boy and two girls. Don’t ask us how we did it, as we have no idea! Life can be so beautiful and fulfilling when young couples can support each other to achieve a common goal. Throughout those striving years, we had always remembered to take vacations, continue to enjoy each other and manage to visit our native country once every few years. We equally supported our families back in our native country – The Gambia!
My wife and I did many kinds of odd jobs but eventually pursued different careers after college that interested us. I worked my way up in Human Resources to a Senior IT Recruiter. While my position as an IT recruiter came with a great salary, I had developed some passion for real estate and was working part time. I wanted a lifelong career that aligned with my goals and values to build my own business that would give me more freedom and to have more impact on other people’s lives.
While my wife pursued her own dreams and found a career in health insurance, we continued to support each other in whatever direction we both wanted to pursue. I eventually took a risky transition to real estate full time, and my wife once again supported me to pursue my vision. We couldn’t have made a better decision, and finally we began to discover our passion and calling to provide services to families and change lives along the way. She obtained her real estate license and joined me to continue to work as a dynamic team to change lives and help build strong communities!
As the common saying goes, “If you want to walk fast, walk alone, but if you want to walk far, walk together!” My wife and I make an incredible team, and we complement each other in both our strengths and weaknesses. We have a common vision of building a better future for ourselves and for our children. We are in the real estate business to change lives and build strong middle-class communities.
As immigrants, we never abandoned our native country. We return to Gambia once every year to visit our families and help support communities and women in many villages. Through the help and support of our clients, we are able to provide clean drinking water to many villages, provide milling machines, and support the high school we both of attended while growing up in Gambia.
We also help sponsor and pay for education for other students and family members who are less fortunate. This is incredibly fulfilling for us to give back to our local communities in both the United States and our native country - The Gambia!
We are passionate about supporting and giving back to our local communities in the U.S. and elsewhere. As we continue to strive in our real estate business, we aim to find new ways to help the communities and causes that are greater than us. Our greater mission is to change lives and create strong middle-class communities through homeownership.
